Habele helps low-income students attend the school of their family's choice.
Habele is a scholarship granting organization. By helping exceptional children to attend prestigious private schools in the district capitals, we aim to empower individuals as well as strengthen community perceptions about the role and value of formal education.
Working with traditional leaders, teachers, community organizations, and volunteers such as those in Peace Corps, we identify students with exceptional academic potential. We negotiate with interested families to design an educational contract. For example, Habele may commit to providing four years of tuition assistance, with the child promising to maintain a certain minimum GPA, and the family dedicating itself to pay for transportation and boarding costs. Habele makes payments directly to the school where the child will attend, and completes a review of the pupil's education progress for each semester.
Our first scholarship was awarded in 2003. The awardee was accepted into the prestigious all-girls Bethania High School in Palau. Scholarships are awarded on a merit basis and require performance contracts signed by the students and their families. The board of directors conducts reviews each semester. Habele has awarded over $25,000 in scholarships since 2006.
